Physiotherapy after Fracture
PHYSIOTHERAPY AFTER FRACTURE
A
fracture is a broken bone. It can be a thin crack in the bone or complete
break. Anyone can have a fracture, but
you are at greater risk of developing fracture, if you have brittle bones or
low bone density. If broken bone has aligned properly and kept immobile, the
healing process is usually straightforward. After bone has healed, it is crucial
to restore muscle strength as well as mobility to the affected area. If you
have a fracture near joint, you may likely to have a stiffness or arthritis
after healing.
What is the
role of physiotherapy after fracture?
o After fracture,
physiotherapy helps you to return to optimum function as quickly as possible.
Physiotherapy helps you to improve your functional mobility. Physiotherapist
can use physical agents or modalities to help you with pain and swelling.
o If your fracture has been
healed with surgery, you might have surgical scar. So, scar massage and
mobilization can help you to reduce adhesion and improve mobility around the
scar.
o Exercises play an important role in
improving strength and mobility. Particular focus should be placed on
particular area and joints around that fractured bone. For example, if you
broke a bone near your elbow, so exercise should include wrist, elbow and
shoulder. Exercise also help to ensure that your bone may tolerate load and stress
that you place during normal every day activities.
Depending
on the severity of problem, loss can be permanent or temporary. So, the
treatment depends very much on the problem identified during your initial
assessment. It will include mixture of following techniques to regain your
muscle power and joint movement:
Ø Massage- to decrease swelling and pain.
Ø Scar management- if fracture is fixed surgically
Ø Ice therapy- to reduce swelling
Ø Stretching exercise- to
improve range of movement
Ø Mobilization- to regain joint mobility
Ø Balance and control work where appropriate
Ø Taping- to help with swelling management
Ø For sports players- return to sport preparatory advice
and work where required.
