PHYSIOTHERAPY AFTER KNEE REPLACEMENT
The
knee is most commonly replaced joint in the body. The knee replacement involves
removing the arthritic part of the bones at knee joint and replaces them with
artificial part. So when you have knee replacement surgery, physiotherapy is a
crucial stage. During this, you will get back on your feet and return to an
active lifestyle.
Physiotherapy
right after your surgery
It
might be surprising for you, but you can start physiotherapy right after your
surgery. A physiotherapist will come to you in your hospital room and show you
the exercise you should start doing right away. Trust that moves are completely
safe for you. They are designed to:
o Improve strength in your
leg
o To restore knee movement
o Help you to walk on your
new knee
What are the
exercises that you can do at home right after your surgery?
“Your success with physiotherapy
largely depends on the commitment to follow the home exercise program”. There are some
exercises that you can do at home:
Circulatory exercise: point and bend your ankles.
Circle your ankles in both directions. Do minimum 20 of each exercise.
Thigh
squeeze: tighten the muscle of your thigh by pushing the back of your thigh on
the bed. Hold for five second and relax. Repeat for 7-10 times.
Heel slides: bed your surgical knee and hip by sliding
your heel towards your buttocks. Keep your heel on the bed throughout the
exercise.
Leg slide: slide your surgical legs out to the sides.
Then, slide your legs back to the starting position.
Straight leg
raise:
bend your non- operated leg. Tighten the muscle on the top of your thigh. Raise
your operated leg up about 12 inches while keeping your knee straight. Hold for
5 seconds and relax and repeat for 7-10 times.
Walking: walk around your bed for at least five times a
day. Gradually increase the distance you walk. This will help you to build your
endurance and strength.
