PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR TENNIS ELBOW
What is
tennis elbow?
If
you have tennis elbow and you never picked a racket in your life. Read on, this
is an article for you, I will clear up your all confusions by explaining what
actually tennis elbow is? This is a common injury in athletes, but can also
occur in non-athletic person. Tennis elbow is a condition where pain occurs on
a bony bump outside of the elbow. It is not a disease of tennis players,
instead it occurs in those who repetitively move their elbow. When you overuse
your muscles over and over again, it put a lot of stress on the elbow tendons,
and they get inflamed. When you keep on moving your inflamed tendon, it leads
to micro tears.
What you can
do about it?
Like
most injuries, it is a great idea to try and prevent any occurrence in the
first place. Initially, this condition can be successfully treated by self
care. Here, you can understand the correct ways to control tennis elbow in the
beginning stage.
Ø The very first step to
treat tennis elbow is rest. Because resting from repititive movement can limit
the further damage to the tendon and give time to repair to already damaged
tissue.
Ø Ice: apply ice or cod pack for 15 minutes 3-4 times a day.
Ø Exercises: exercises are really beneficial for tennis elbow, as it
increase the flexibility and strength of the tendon and muscles. There are some
exercises which you can do at home. (Hold all exercises for 10 seconds, repeat
10 times and 2 times a day.)
·
Sit at a table with your arm resting on the table. Hold a
towel roll in your hand and squeeze for 10 seconds. Relax and repeat for 10
times.
·
Hold your arm straight without bending your elbow with palm
faces up. Use other hand to hold your fingers and bend it towards you’re your
body until you feel stretch in your inner forearm.
·
Similarly, this time your palm faces downward and rest is the
same. Perform this exercise until you feel stretch in your outer forearm.
Things to
avoid:-
o Don’t lift heavy weight with your affected
arm.
o Avoid repetitive twisting and
turning movement of wrist and forearm.
o While doing exercise,
don’t move your forearm beyond pain.
