PHYSIOTHERAPY FOR VERTIGO
Do you ever have a feeling that room is
spinning or your surroundings are moving, even though, they are not? You probably have
vertigo. Vertigo can be one of the
most unpleasant experiences because it comes on so suddenly and intensely. The
most common form of vertigo is positional vertigo, which is also called benign
paroxysmal positional vertigo. Often vertigo is eased by lying down and
aggravate by sitting up and moving.
Should I be worried? In some instances, vertigo is caused by
conditions that are not serious. However, it can be very disabling and get in
the way of your day-to-day activities.
How can
physiotherapy help with vertigo and how effective it is?
There
are some exercises that you can do at home to help settle your symptoms. These
exercises help to improve your balance. Begin with exercise slowly and try to
do more repetitions.
·
To begin with first exercise, stand with chair in front of
you and wall behind for support, in case you lose your balance. Your arms
should be relaxed and at your side. Do this exercise twice a day and to
progress, perform with eyes closed.
·
Forward and backward sway: to do this exercise,
position yourself as mentioned above and sway forward and backward slowly.
Shift your weight to toes and then heels. Move shoulder and hip together. Don’t
bend at your hip. Perform this exercise 20 times.
·
Right to left sway: - this exercise is
similar to second exercise, but move your body right-to-left instead of
backward-forward.
·
Marching: your position will
remain same as other exercise. Keep your feet slightly apart and March in place
by lifting your knees high towards the ceiling.
·
Walking: - this is a simple but
powerful exercise for vertigo. It will not only help you to perform better, but
also boost your self-confidence. If you are concerns about falling, make sure
to have someone with you or walk in a hall, next to the wall.
