Text neck is the condition of altered
posture of head, neck and shoulders due to prolonged use of mobile phones,
tablets etc for texting or any other purpose. The name of the condition is
given because of the increase in number of hours people spend on their mobiles,
specially for texting. This altered posture can lead to tension headache, neck
pain, shoulder pain and increased kyphosis or curve in the thoracic region or
upper back.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS?
Symptoms include:
1. Stiffness: There
can be stiffness in the neck after prolonged use of it in a fixed position.
2. Radiating: Pain
can be at a fixed point or going down till shoulders, arms and forearms.
3. Rounded shoulders: Shoulders
become round or dropped due to tightness of the muscles present in front of the
body
4. Headache: It
can also happen in case of sub-occipital muscle tightness.
5. Weakness: Muscle
weakness can be there due to altered posture.
HOW TO MANAGE IT?
Since we all know that prevention is
better than cure. One should try to decrease the number of hours you spend on
your device.
Also you can keep a check on your
posture by keeping the device at a height which puts least strain on the neck.
Take frequent breaks in between your work and try to incorporate some simple
stretches during those breaks so as to relieve the stress put on the muscles
and prevent alteration of the posture.
In case you are too late for the
prevention part, still try all the above mentioned tips to prevent the
condition from progressing. Along with that, you can start with some hot or
cold fermentation, simple exercises like chin tucks and in case of severe pain
medications can be taken.
